What Are Helical Piers for Decks? (And When Should You Use Them?)

If you’ve been talking to a deck builder lately and the words “helical pier” came up in the conversation, you probably nodded along and made a mental note to look it up later. That’s a fair reaction. Most homeowners have never heard of them until they’re standing in their backyard listening to someone explain why the soil isn’t going to cooperate with a standard concrete footing.

So What Is a Helical Pier, Actually

A helical pier is essentially a giant steel screw. That description sounds dismissive, but it’s accurate. You’ve got a long steel shaft with helical plates welded around it near the bottom, and the whole thing gets driven into the ground by a hydraulic motor that rotates it down until it reaches load-bearing soil. 

The plates pull the shaft through the dirt the same way the threads on a wood screw pull through a two-by-four. Once the pier is at the right depth and bearing the right amount of resistance, the top is fitted with a bracket that supports a deck post.

That’s the whole concept. A screw in the ground, holding up your deck.

Why Anyone Uses Them Instead of Concrete

The standard alternative, a concrete footing dug into a hole and poured around a post anchor, has been the default deck foundation in America for as long as anyone’s been building decks. The concrete footing works well in straightforward conditions. The trouble is that plenty of real-world sites don’t fit that description.

A quick way to think about where each option lands:

The Hillside Example

We worked on a hillside lot a while back, where the homeowners wanted a fairly large elevated deck off the back of the house. The slope dropped sharply within a few feet of the foundation, which meant any standard footings would have needed to be dug six, seven, or eight feet deep to find proper bearing.

That kind of excavation on a slope is expensive, dangerous, and disruptive to the existing landscape. We brought in a helical pier crew instead. They installed eight piers in a single day, with almost zero disturbance to the yard, no curing time, and no open holes in the ground for someone to fall into. The deck went up the following week.

That’s the kind of project where helical piers stop being a nice-to-have and start being the obviously correct answer.

When the Soil Itself Is the Problem

A lot of properties around the country sit on soils that genuinely don’t want to support a long-term load reliably. The usual suspects:

  • Expansive clay, which swells when wet and shrinks when dry, slowly destroying anything built on top
  • Sandy or silty soils, which shift under load and don’t compact reliably
  • High water table sites, where any excavation fills with water before concrete can cure
  • Fill soil, often found on developed lots, which can settle unpredictably for years
  • Mixed strata, where a few feet of decent soil sits over something far worse

Helical piers handle each of these by reaching past the unstable surface layers and anchoring into deeper soil that actually wants to support a load.

The Frost Line Question

In northern climates, the frost line can run three, four, sometimes five feet deep, and any footing that doesn’t reach below that depth will heave when the ground freezes. Concrete footings handle this fine if you’re willing to dig deep enough, but the deeper you go, the more excavation cost piles up.

Helical piers are driven mechanically, so the depth question becomes a matter of how long the shaft is rather than how much dirt has to come out of a hole. On a deep frost line site, that math swings the cost comparison considerably.

Heavy Decks Need a Different Foundation

A modest single-level deck off a kitchen door doesn’t usually need anything more than well-poured concrete. A multi-level deck with a built-in kitchen, a hot tub, a pergola roof, and a pizza oven is a different conversation entirely.

What makes helical piers shine on heavily loaded decks:

  • Each pier can be load-tested during installation, giving real numbers rather than estimates
  • The bearing capacity is verified before the deck goes up, not hoped for afterward
  • Engineering documentation is straightforward, which makes inspections cleaner

The National Park Service’s technical brief on sustainable foundation systems actually lists helical anchors as a preferred option for sensitive or load-sensitive sites where conventional excavation isn’t ideal.

Trees, Roots, and Tight Spaces

The other piece worth mentioning is what helical piers don’t disturb. No backhoe in the yard, no piles of dirt sitting on the lawn for a week, no concrete truck access required. The installation footprint is essentially the diameter of the pier itself.

That matters quite a bit if any of the following apply to your site:

  • Mature trees you want to keep intact, including their root systems
  • Established landscaping that took years to look the way it does
  • Underground irrigation, electrical, or utility lines
  • Tight backyard access where heavy equipment can’t fit
  • Patios, walkways, or hardscape you don’t want damaged

For homeowners who’ve spent serious time on the yard, this is sometimes the deciding factor on its own.

What They Cost

Helical piers cost more per pier than a comparable concrete footing in straightforward soil. Not dramatically more, but a real premium.

Where they tend to win on total cost:

  • Sloped or hillside sites that would otherwise need deep excavation
  • Heavy clay or wet conditions requiring expensive site prep
  • Projects where landscape restoration after concrete work would be significant
  • Deep frost line zones where conventional footings need to go very deep
  • Heavily loaded decks where engineering complexity adds cost on the concrete side

On a flat lot with normal soil and a small deck, concrete is almost always cheaper. On a difficult site, helical piers can come out ahead once every cost is added up.

When You Don’t Need Them

Worth being honest about this part. If you’ve got a flat backyard, decent soil, a manageable frost line, and you’re building a standard single-level deck, you don’t need helical piers. Concrete footings will do the job for less money. A good deck builder will tell you that rather than trying to upsell you into a foundation system you don’t actually need.

When You Probably Do

The signals that point toward helical piers, any one of which is worth taking seriously, any two together usually decisive:

  • The lot has meaningful slope
  • The soil shifts, stays wet, or has a history of foundation issues
  • You’re in a deep frost zone
  • You’re building a heavy or complex deck
  • Mature landscaping you don’t want disturbed surrounds the build area
  • A soil test came back with concerning results
  • Access is too limited for excavation equipment
